Early Life and Education
Born on February 12, 1964, in Kampung Ladang, Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu Darul Iman, Ustaz Azhar Idrus received his early education at Hj Mohd Sharif Primary School in Alor Star, Kedah. He continued his studies at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Darulaman in Alor Star until form 2. Later, in form 3, he returned to his birth state and attended Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sultan Sulaiman in Kuala Terengganu, where he completed his studies up to form 6.
Ustaz Azhar’s religious education was acquired through talaqqi (personal guidance) under the mentorship of various religious teachers in Kuala Terengganu. Among his esteemed teachers were:
- Tuan Guru Haji Syed Mokhtar – Mentored Ustaz Azhar through the completion of approximately 40 Jawi books.
- Tuan Guru Mohd Tahir – Guided him to accomplish the Khatam Kitab Jawi, comprising about 25 pieces.
- Tuan Guru Mohd Hakim – Introduced him to the study of Arabic books such as Nahu, Sorof, Usul Fiqh, Mustolah Hadith, Usul Quran, and Balaghoh.
- Tuan Guru Haji Hasyim – Deepened Ustaz Azhar’s understanding of Arabic books, particularly in the areas of Nahu, Sorof, Fiqh, Tafsir, and Faraidh.
- Tuan Guru Haji Ibrahim Egypt – Facilitated the study of Sirah Nabawi and Lughah Arabiciyah.
- Tuan Guru Haji Muhammad Zubir – Further enriched his knowledge in fiqh & nahu.
- Tuan Guru Haji Mohd Zain (Pondok Lubuk Pandan) – Guided him in the study of Fiqh, Nahwu, Sorof, Tafsir, & Balahgoh.
Before dedicating himself to religious studies, Ustaz Azhar was involved in music and served as a guitarist in a music group in Kuala Terengganu. Despite opportunities to pursue a recording career with his band, he opted out, as his intention was to enjoy music rather than seek fame. In 1985, he transitioned to become a music teacher.
Besides his religious and musical pursuits, Ustaz Azhar is a talented photographer, fostering a friendly connection with the younger generation. Moreover, Ustaz Azhar has displayed an active interest in sports and once represented Terengganu in cycling events during the 1980s. As part of his leisure routine, he would patrol the city of Kuala Terengganu with his friends. His involvement led to requests for him to inaugurate cycling programs.
Professional Journey
Ustaz Azhar’s professional journey began at Utusan Malaysia Kuala Terengganu branch, where he worked as a graphic artist. However, after his marriage in 1990, he made the decision to leave his job and become a batik embroiderer, using this opportunity to pursue a serious study of religious knowledge. His commitment to learning led him to seek guidance from various religious teachers, attending their homes or lodges for his education.
Ustaz Azhar’s transformation towards a life of religious scholarship was inspired by his close friend, a former member of a “Punk” group, who had disappeared for five years. Upon his friend’s return, Ustaz noticed a significant positive change in his friend’s demeanor, clothing, and behavior. He discovered that his friend had spent this time studying religion in Patani. Impressed by his friend’s transformation, Ustaz Azhar decided to embark on a similar path of religious study.
Family Life
Ustaz Azhar is married and has three wives, with 12 children.
Accident
On November 4, 2019, Ustaz Azhar experienced an accident while cycling home on Jalan Pusara. The incident resulted in a broken left hand and nose. Prior to the mishap, he had been a former member of the Iklim group, serving as both a lead and rhythm guitarist. During leisurely cycling with Terengganu Youth, Sports, and NGO Development Committee Chairman, Wan Sukairi Wan Abdullah, he encountered the accident. Ustaz Azhar underwent surgery at the hospital, eventually making a full recovery and being discharged from medical care.
