Ustadh Ubaydullah Evans holds the distinguished position of being ALIM’s first Scholar-in-Residence. His path to Islamic scholarship is marked by a profound journey that began with his conversion to Islam during high school. Following this pivotal moment, Ustadh Ubaydullah embarked on a dedicated pursuit of knowledge, delving into the foundational books of Islam under the guidance of local scholars.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
His educational journey continued at Chicagoland’s Institute of Islamic Education (IIE), where he honed his understanding of Islamic principles. Ustadh Ubaydullah’s quest for knowledge led him to Tarim, Yemen, and Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt, where he achieved the significant milestone of becoming the first African-American graduate from its Shari’a program.
Beyond his scholarly pursuits, Ustadh Ubaydullah actively engages with various organizations, including instructing at the Ta’leef Collective and contributing to the Inner-City Muslim Action Network (IMAN). As ALIM’s Scholar-in-Residence, he plays a pivotal role as a core instructor in the ALIM Summer Program, offering insightful courses on the History of Islamic Law, Shama’il, Aphorisms of Ibn Ata’illah, and other subjects.
In addition to his role at ALIM, Ustadh Ubaydullah Evans serves as the Scholar In-Residence for the Islamic Reading Room Chicago and holds the position of Executive Director at the American Learning Institute for Muslims (ALIM). His commitment to education extends beyond formal settings, as he also imparts knowledge as an instructor with the Ta’leef Collective and the Inner-City Muslim Action Network.
