Irshaad Sedick’s Biography

Mawlana Irshaad Sedick initiated his Islamic education at Darun Naim Institute of Higher Islamic Learning. He furthered his education at the Dar al-‘Ulum al-‘Arabiyyah al-Islamiyyah (DUAI) in Strand, Western Cape under the guidance of Mufti Taha Karaan. He graduated from DUAI in 2011 and has taught at the institute, in a full time capacity, from 2014-2017.

Irshaad holds formal ijazat (scholarly links to the Prophet Muhammad) from a number of renown Islamic scholars (Sh Muhammad ‘Awamah, Ml Abdul Hafeez Makki, Sh Muhammad Ya’qubi Dimashqi, Sh Muhammad bin Yahya Ninowi, Sh Salmaan al-Nadwi, Mufti Taha Karaan and Dr. Jonathan Brown).

He directed the Discover Islam Centre, which focuses on interfaith dialogue and the welfare of the underprivileged from 2017 – 2019. From 2010 -2014 he served as the resident Imam of Masjid al-Munowar in Retreat, Cape Town, where he arranged dynamic short courses comprising the expertise of the top local scholars of Islam.

He has twelve years teaching experience in formal part-time Islamic education at some of the leading institutes such as Darun Naim, Dar al-Turath al-Islami, Sakina Foundation, Discover Islam, Zahraa, Mizan and Al Jeem.

He has appeared as a guest speaker on a number of occasions for various organizations including the MSA (Muslim Students Association), Discover Islam, IMA (Islamic Medical Association), MJC (Muslim Judicial Council) and other student and community-based organisations. He regularly appears on ITV (Islamic Television).

He is often hosted on the airwaves of the local Muslim community radio station, the Voice of the Cape and his programmes are played daily. He currently directs the Al Jeem Educational Foundation since 2019 and serves as a Khatib (lecturer) at the Mowbray Masjid.
