The Institution of Cambridge is a public research university with a college campus that is situated in Cambridge, England. Cambridge, the third-oldest university still in operation, was established in 1209 and granted a royal charter by King Henry III in 1231.

It is also one of the most well-known; in fact, it is now ranked second globally and first in Europe by the QS World University Rankings. Numerous historical figures, including Francis Bacon, Lord Byron, Oliver Cromwell, Charles Darwin, Stephen Hawking, John Maynard Keynes, John Milton, Vladimir Nabokov, Jawaharlal Nehru, Isaac Newton, Bertrand Russell, Manmohan Singh, and Al Gore, have attended the university, including 11 Fields Medalists, 7 Turing Award winners, 47 heads of state, 14 British prime ministers, 194 Olympic medalists, and others.

Cambridge graduates and professors have been awarded 121 Nobel Prizes, the most of any university in the world.

The suspendium clericorium (the hanging of the scholars) in a conflict with nearby townspeople served as a major inspiration for the establishment of the University of Cambridge in the 13th century. A group of academics who fled the University of Oxford for Cambridge as a result. The two old English universities are commonly referred to as Oxbridge together, despite the fact that they are occasionally referred to as rivals.

About 150 academic departments, faculties, and other organizations were combined into six schools and 31 constituent colleges to form the university, which was founded from a number of previous institutions.

Within the institution, each college operates independently and is in charge of hiring personnel and setting operational policies. Additionally, it is a requirement for all university students to be a member of one of the colleges. The university doesn’t have a central campus; instead, its academic and administrative facilities are spread out throughout the city. Group supervisions, which typically consist of one to four students, are the mainstay of undergraduate instruction at Cambridge.

This intense teaching method is undoubtedly the pinnacle of an Oxbridge undergraduate education. However, the university, not the colleges, is the one that grants degrees. The core university faculties and departments provide lectures, seminars, laboratory work, and possibly supplementary supervision. The majority of postgraduate education is likewise delivered centrally.
